SIM Celebrates 150th Anniversary

On October 2, 2007, the Society for the Increase of the Ministry (SIM) will celebrate its 150th anniversary with a gala evening of celebration and thanksgiving.

The event will occur at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut. This is a fitting venue, since three of the Society’s eight founders were members of the faculty.

The program will include a choral Evensong in Trinity’s Chapel, a social hour and dinner. Invitations to preach at Evensong and speak at the dinner have been extended to leaders in the Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dr. Borden Painter, former President of Trinity College and SIM, and the Rev. Canon John Mitman, the current SIM executive director, will also make brief remarks.

Dr. Painter has written a new history of the Society for its 150th anniversary. For more information, contact the SIM office at 860-233-1732.

New Way to Use IRAs For Those Over 70 Years

If you are over the age of 70, you can make a gift directly from your Independent Retirement Account (IRA) without being taxed on the amount withdrawn. The Pension Protection Act, signed into law August 17, 2006, allows those over the age of 70 to make charitable gifts directly from their IRAs to charitable organizations such as SIM during 2006 and 2007 without having to pay tax on the money.

This provision applies only to the calendar years 2006 and 2007. It allows a person to give up to $100,000 per year from his or her retirement plan. For more information, contact the Society at 860-233-1732.

This is an opportunity to turn tax dollars into gift dollars.
